Fire Service Leadership Award

To recognize a member of the Maryland fire, rescue or emergency services community who has displayed leadership in advancing the health, safety and readiness of the Maryland fire, rescue and emergency services.  The award embodies the legacy of Chief John W. Hoglund, Director Emeritus of the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, whose contributions to the fire service throughout his illustrious career have benefited emergency services personnel at the local, state and national levels.

This recognition of leadership shall be demonstrated by an individual who has:

  • Demonstrated leadership in the training of Maryland emergency services personnel;
  • Served as a catalyst for changing the culture of the fire and emergency services in the state of Maryland relating to firefighter health and safety, stressing the importance of safe practices during training and at the emergency scene, and on firefighter fitness and health; and
  • Established relationships with local government officials to build their trust and understanding regarding the training, equipment and staffing needs of the Maryland fire, rescue and emergency services.

Criteria:

Award of the Chief John W. Hoglund Fire Service Leadership Award will be to an individual that has emphasized leadership, innovation, professional development, safety and health, integrity, service to the public and contributions to the fire and emergency services at the local, state and national levels.

The act justifying award of the Chief John W. Hoglund Fire Service Leadership Award must be outlined by the individual submitting the application.

The Chief John W. Hoglund Fire Service Leadership Award may be awarded posthumously.

Eligibility:

Any person who is a member of a recognized fire, rescue or EMS organization; labor organization or training facility within the State of Maryland.

Nominations:

The nomination must be submitted by the following:

  1. A candidate for the Chief John W. Hoglund Fire Service Leadership Award cannot nominate him/herself. An application must be submitted by an individual who possesses a strong understanding of the candidate’s contributions to the Maryland fire, rescue and/or emergency services.

The nomination shall be submitted on the provided online application.

The nomination shall include a narrative explaining the reason for the nomination and convey how the candidate’s contributions have addressed any of the three goals described above. It shall also described how the nominee has exemplified the work, dedication and distinctive leadership that has resulted in a positive impact in advancing the readiness of the fire, rescue and/or emergency services.

Review of nominations will be conducted by the MFCA Awards Committee.

Applications:

Applications will be completed and submitted via online application only from January 1st to March 1st annually.

Awards:

The Chief John W. Hoglund Fire Service Leadership Award will be presented at the MFCA Annual Elections Meeting to the recipient or their family.

The Chief John W. Hoglund Fire Service Leadership Award will be presented by the MFCA President with the MFCA Awards Committee present.

A service pin, medal, certificate, and plaque commemorating the accomplishment(s) will be awarded to the recipient.

Members receiving the Chief John W. Hoglund Fire Service Leadership Award may be nominated by the MFCA Awards Committee for the Congressional Fire Services Institute Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award.
